Gravitational Bending of Light near Compact Objects
نویسنده
چکیده
A photon emitted near a compact object at an angle α with respect to the radial direction escapes to infinity at a different angle ψ > α. This bending of light is caused by a strong gravitational field. We show that, in a Schwarzschild metric, the effect is described by 1− cosα = (1 − cosψ)(1− rg/R) where R/rg is the emission radius in Schwarzschild units. The formula is approximate and it applies at R ≥ 2rg only, however at these radii it has amazing accuracy, fully sufficient in many applications. As one application we develop a new formulation for the light bending effects in pulsars. It reveals the simple character of these effects and gives their quantitative description with practically no losses of accuracy (for the typical radius of a neutron star R = 3rg the error is 1%). The visible fraction of a star surface is shown to be Sv/4πR2 = [2(1− rg/R)]−1 which is 3/4 forR = 3rg . The instantaneous flux of a pulsar comes from one or two antipodal polar caps that rotate in the visible zone. The pulse produced by one blackbody cap is found to be sinusoidal (light bending impacts the pulse amplitude but not its shape). When both caps are visible, the pulse shows a plateau: the variable parts of the antipodal emissions precisely cancel each other. The pulsed fraction of blackbody emission with antipodal symmetry has an upper limit Amax = (R− 2rg)/(R+ 2rg). Pulsars with A > Amax must be asymmetric. QSO-Galaxy Association and Gravitational Lensing
The amplification caused by gravitational light bending by compact objects in a foreground galaxy can affect the apparent number density of background QSOs, as well as their distribution in the fields of galactic halos. In this work we investigate the number enhancement of QSOs in the fields of galactic halos caused by point mass lensing effect and singular isothermal lensing effect, and apply ...
متن کاملMicrolensing by Compact Objects associated to Gas Clouds
We investigate gravitational microlensing of point-like lenses surrounded by diffuse gas clouds. Besides gravitational bending, one must also consider refraction and absorption phenomena. According to the cloud density, the light curves may suffer small to large deviations from Paczyński curves, up to complete eclipses. Moreover, the presence of the cloud endows this type of microlensing events...
متن کاملThe Search for Matter with Gravitational Lensing
Gravitational lensing is a powerful tool to detect compact matter on very different mass scales. Of particular importance is the fact that lensing is sensitive to both luminous and dark matter alike. Depending on the mass scale, all lensing effects are used in the search for matter: offset in position, image distortion, magnification, and multiple images. Gravitational lens detections cover thr...

Basics of standard theory of microlensing are introduced. Results of mi-crolensing observations toward Magellanic Clouds and relations with dark matter (DM) problem in our Galaxy are described. Pixel microlensing observations and recent discoveries of planets with microlensing observations are listed. Gravitational lensing is based on a simple physical phenomenon that in a gravitational field a...
متن کاملOff-equatorial orbits in strong gravitational fields near compact objects
Near a black hole or an ultracompact star, motion of particles is governed by strong gravitational field. Electrically charged particles feel also electromagnetic force arising due to currents inside the star or plasma circling around. We study a possibility that the interplay between gravitational and electromagnetic action may allow for stable, energetically bound off-equatorial motion of cha...
